Matthew Rohde is a classical guitarist, educator, and film composer. As a soloist Matthew has performed on four continents and in such venues as El Palacio de Bellas Artes (Mexico City), La Casa de la Música (Quito), Il Pallazzo Chigiana (Siena), and Sprague Hall (New Haven). He has also performed alongside such luminaries as Grammy-nominated pianist Clarice Assad, recorder virtuoso Horacio Franco, and violinist Owen Dalby. Once he even performed for the president of China.

Alongside colleagues Adam Levin and Scott Borg, Matthew is a member of The Great Necks (www.thegreatnecks.com), a guitar trio focused on exploring orchestral repertoire through original arrangements as whimsical as they are ambitious. Within two weeks of its release in November 2018, the trio’s debut album reached the Billboard Top 10 charts in the Traditional Classical category and was described by Classical Guitar Magazine as “a wonder to behold.” Matthew’s original arrangements for the trio have been described as “ingeniously transferred to the guitar with spectacular results” (Classical Guitar Magazine) and “engrossing” (The Whole Note).

As a composer, Matthew has worked with HBO and directors Lorena Luciano and Filippo Piscopo. Most recently, Matthew composed and recorded the score to It Will Be Chaos, a "beautifully executed" (LA Times) documentary about the challenges faced by newly-arrived refugees in Europe. It premiered on HBO in June 2018.

A lifelong educator, Matthew also co-directs Kithara Project (www.kitharaproject.org), a nonprofit organization that oversees classical guitar programs for at-risk youth in Boston, Albuquerque, and Mexico City. Matthew is especially involved in Kithara Project’s program in Mexico City, where he teaches several days a week. Through its interlinked programs, Kithara Project also promotes cultural exchange. Matthew has taught masterclasses in dozens of conservatories and universities across the US and Latin America, and his students have won scholarships at major conservatories in the US and Europe.

Matthew completed his studies at Yale College; the Yale School of Music; the Conservatoire Nationale de Musique et Danse in Paris; and the Accademia Chigiana in Siena, Italy. His teachers have included maestros Benjamin Verdery, Oscar Ghiglia, and Roland Dyens. Matthew also holds a Master’s degree in International Affairs from Sciences Po, in Paris, and is conversant (to varying degrees)  in Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian, and Arabic. Matthew lives in Mexico City, where in his spare time he makes ceramic pottery and goes on hikes with his dog Maya.
